Welcome back, myself and Mrs Dobson hope that you have all had a lovely Christmas break and are ready for the new term at Sherburn School. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Miss Snaith, who has joined our Key Stage Two team as class teacher for year 5 and 6 for the Spring Term.

Here is a breakdown of what we will be covering during the Spring term.

We will start by looking at different stories with a theme, as well as explanation texts.

In the second half term, we will be looking at works of different poets and will be writing recounts.

We will be following our Long Term Plan for Mathematics which provides coverage of all areas of the Key Stage 2 maths curriculum once per term. In the first half term we will be looking at place value, calculations and geometry.

Evolution and Inheritance

We will be learning about how animals have evolved over time and where life came from in the first half term. We will also look at genetic traits in humans as part of this unit.

The second half-term will be spent looking at how forces affect our everyday lives, including gravity, friction, air resistance and more!

For history we will be looking in detail at our local city of York, considering its chronology and how it has developed over time, through the Roman, Viking, Medieval and Victorian eras and considering the impact of war on the city.

Art/Design and Technology

Art will be focussing on building sculptures from different mediums and how these have been used over the years.

Design and Technology will focus on researching, designing, making and evaluating a piece of textile.

We will focus on Hinduism during this term, encompassing beliefs, practices and symbols.

In the second half term, we will be focussing on the Easter story.

We will be looking at manipulating images in the first half term and how to create and use a spreadsheet in the second half term.

This term, we will be focussing on playing the Glockenspiel and reading sheet music.

In the second half-term, we will be adapting this into a piece called ‘The Dragon Song’..

PE and Games will continue to be taught by Mr Ellis this year, who is a specialist in delivering engaging sports-based activities for all ages. Children must have their PE kits in school throughout term, taking them home during holidays to be washed and returned promptly at the start of the new term. The focus of these sessions will be Gymnastics for the first half term and Basketball for the second half term.

Mrs  Cordingley (a specialist French Teacher) will be teaching us all about how to talk, read, write and listen in French. They will learn to use these topics to develop their sentence construction and fluency of speech.

PSHCE topics for this term being ‘Too Much Selfie Isn’t Healthy’ and ‘Don’t Rub It In, Rub It Out’.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the

curriculum or anything else then do not hesitate to contact me or come in to see me after school.

Miss Boustead
